At times when we feel powerless amidst what feel like unstoppable forces out of our control, it's good to remember where we do have agency—in the ways we show up in the world. Systems move through the movements of the people who make them up. And those movements are not only the big visible actions "out there," but also the actions that fall below the imperial radar because they are deemed peripheral or insignificant or intangible. Often what is happening beneath the surface does more work than we think...

Join Rebecca and Mel from The Pākehā Project for this one-day workshop exploring the deep mahi we as tangata Tiriti can do in the journey towards a Tiriti-led future. We’ll be at the Vogelmorn Bowling Club in beautiful Brooklyn!

Come along for a day of depth; exploring the amazing potential that the relational space of te Tiriti o Waitangi has for us all. This one is for tangata Tiriti who are deeply committed to an ethic of restoration in Aotearoa and want to go beyond an intellectual understanding.

Using practices of Haumanu, a healing-centred approach to systems change, we’ll be inquiring into our own roles in reweaving the relational fabric that Te Tiriti o Waitangi offered to all people in Aotearoa, but that did not happen at the time.

In times like this, when the dynamics of dominance, oppression and fear are again on the rise globally, we have an incredible opportunity to take another path—towards a relationship that models something quite different.

It's an exploration of the relational healing we need to do, beginning with our relationship with our own bodies, as the basis for fractals of wider relational healing—societal, systemic, planetary...

The patterns that are playing out at a planetary scale are mirrored in our own internal landscapes. It will not be until we can recognise that the issues facing us are not actually “out there,” but within us, that we may finally have a chance of a liveable future.

This essay is an exploration of the colonial-patriarchal nexus, and the human supremacy that underpins it. It asks us to dig much deeper than surface behaviours and see what underpins them—the value system and worldview that we have been acculturated out of recognising. It suggests that if we immerse ourselves in the complexity of the living world, rather than default to reductive ways of abstracting, simplifying, and distancing ourselves from it, we might develop the capacities we need to meet the moment we are in.

Time for true humility. And a felt sense of our entanglement.

The Regulatory Standards Bill will entrench this paradigm even further. It says that private property (ie wealth) is the most important thing to protect. Not life. Wealth. We are seeing the limits of divide and conquer logic. This logic, underpinning the world of modernity, was never going to lead to collective flourishing. It cannot deal with interdependence. It cannot deal with complexity. It cannot deal with evolution. It's time for a paradigm shift. It's time to listen to those who know how to work with the holistic, the non-binary, the unpredictable, the dynamic, the entangled, the relational, the transcontextual, the eco-logical, the real. While we cannot match this ravenous and destructive monoculture at its own game, we can meet it by (re)learning to embody and enact a much more sophisticated immersive logic of relationality and care, no matter where we live and what we do. We are not self-sufficient units floating in space. We need each other. We complement each other. We are not threats, but lifeboats. And that is not weakness; it is real strength. ❤️

—Who is doing the defining?
—On whose values and worldview is this based?

Te Tiriti is about balance, not dominance, and we have not yet managed to have a mature conversation about the fact that sovereignty was never ceded by Māori, and the right to define the norms by which we all live was forcibly taken by the Crown.

Time for the constitutional conversations (not binary, zero-sum-game, pre-determined debates) we actually need to have if we are to heal the massive ongoing intergenerational trauma of colonisation. Because none of this will "go away" until we do. If we still think forced assimilation is the way, then we clearly haven't learnt our global history lessons.
